Aims of the subjects
 

Part 1 - AB Tests

Bearing and self discipline.  This is to teach the essentials of foot drill in order to enable movement in an orderly manner and to wear the uniform correctly.

Aim/Organisation of the CCF (RN).  This takes the form of a talk and group discussion.

Elementary Naval Knowledge.  This topic covers the role of the Royal Navy, ranks of the three services, information about our parent establishment, HMS President and our affiliated ship, HMS Westminster.

Basic Seamanship.  This section covers ship organisation and sea terms, cordage, bends and hitches.

Swimming.  This is to ensure a minimum swimming ability, to practice wearing and swimming in both life jackets and buoyancy aids, to understand the difference between these survival aids.

Skill at arms, shooting and safety.  This is to teach the rules of safety when handling the
0.22 inch calibre rifle to an examination standard.

Having completed the above a cadet is rated as an Able Seaman, however to complete his Naval Proficiency he must also complete part 2.

Part 2 - Proficiency Syllabus

Navigation and rule of the road.
  To give a basic understanding of the various shapes and lights used on buoys, the rules for navigation in tidal areas and the ability to plot a course using naval charts.

General maritime affairs and knowledge of the Navy.  This includes an understanding of the role of the RN in maritime affairs, the chain of command, identification of the various types of ships and their specific roles along with the branches and specialisation of the officers.

Seamanship.  A more advanced look at rigging and practical seamanship drills.

Squad drill and power of command.   The ability to be able to demonstrate the various drill movements and instruct a squad.
