The Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel

A Living Memorial. The Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel at Pangbourne College has been built to commemorate all those who died in the South Atlantic in 1982 and is regularly used by the school for services, assemblies and concerts. It was opened in March 2000 by HM The Queen, cost £2.3 million and seats 580. Its design, which came about as a result of a nationwide competition won by Crispin Wride Architectural Design Studio, is reminiscent of the shape of a ship, or of hands cupped in prayer. Natural light flows down the pale coloured walls from clear glass surrounding the curved roof and diffuses through the focal feature at the north end: a dramatic stained glass window designed by John Clark who also created the Lockerbie memorial window. The Old Pangbournian Tri-Service window hangs in the gallery at the south end of the chapel.
