WORK RELATED LEARNING

During the Lent term, the Lower Sixth are briefed on Work Related Learning. As Sixth Form pupils, they are expected to carry out a period of work experience during their time at Pangbourne. The ideal period for students to undertake a placement would be during the time between their last AS exam and the launch of their A2 courses. For most students this will involve the week beginning on Monday 11th June. However, some students may find that their AS exams finish earlier than this. All the Lower Sixth then return to school following post-exam leave on the Monday 18th June.

Our philosophy is quite simply that our pupils should experience the world of work; if it can be matched to individual talents and aspirations then that is an added benefit. However, we feel that being responsible for organising oneself and working and dealing with others is valuable experience in its own right. Many universities will expect to see mention of work experience on the UCAS form, in some cases it may be a prerequisite.  It also provides a valuable ‘taster’ of a working environment, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding course and career selection.

The organisation of a work placement is essentially the responsibility of the students themselves; however their tutors and I will be happy to guide them should they have any difficulties. They will be expected to make initial contact with the relevant companies via a written letter along with a Curriculum Vitae. When a placement has been confirmed, the details should be sent to me. Once I have the relevant details, I can then approach the company to ensure that the placement will be purposeful and that all Health & Safety Risk Assessments are in place. Students must ensure that they have confirmed the date of their last AS exam before arranging their placement.

Many parents may have links with companies that would be suitable for work placements. Equally, you may feel that you would be able to offer a relevant placement for a Pangbournian. If you feel that you could be of assistance in offering placements to our students, please do not hesitate to contact me.
